But as if all the moonshine had pumped into their eyes

Peeling off skin with the tar and the feathers
I kneaded the shells where his muscles were leather.
There’s an abscessed absence where his legs come together.
A burn on his neck squirms like worms in bad weather.

They kissed with cicadas at night.
The men stole them away at first light.

Clearing his throat with gargling chokes
He moved to put his back on my oak.
His eyes looked through me
To a house in the east where
An annoyed young girl
Stamps out her window.

I’d seen him before in the fields
We’d each work for all we could yield.
But his eyes would climb the stalks beyond mine.
He was projected on the horizon.
I had seen him before in the fields.
