Ribbons 05:33
Chewed up by an alley, I swallowed my front teeth. And they gave me something too, carried in composted jeans. And the mortar in the wall melted, it leaked between, above my knees. Beaten down by sweaty tongues. Beaten down… Searching and licking all of me. Taking the sound from my jaws, claws on curious claws. Clamour clumsy in my throat, starting to open up holes. They took 19 letters out. They took… Pulling ribbons from my mouth. They took my tongue but they left my voice. It has no shape but it’s still my voice. I hum to her from outer rooms The tune her fathers never knew.

A girl sits outside on her front porch steps Turning a squirrel into a squirt bottle. Beauty marks and freckles redden her smile. She doesn’t know that it’s only homework. She handles her model like slick wet dirt. A goddess watches marrow flowing into the earth. On a bus that left Edmonton behind A man began to sweat while the brakes whined. This shitty trip home would be holy this time. He spread another man’s skin On his teeth with a knife in the farmland. A sowing god shook the seeds in his head. I left my eyes in a strange world where my fingers scraped papers to pearl. There’s a gap between heaven and me. The hand that killed the lambs made me. I float amid risen water. The past and Saguenay drowned Chicoutimi. Fathers breast stroked to their sons and their daughters. Mothers breast stroked to their sons and their daughters. A flood doesn’t make a town clean once it’s dry. A drooling god dreams of a drowned desperate cry. I left my eyes in a strange world where my fingers scraped papers to pearl. There’s a gap between heaven and me.

Grab the neighbourhood by the heels of its babies And the teenagers smiling wasted. And me, I’m now my urban self wondering about that somewhere else, A place with domino backyard and teenagers smiling wasted. I know I’m only visiting home after I’ve been out on my own. I know I’m only visiting home after I’ve been kicked out. Grab all adulthood by the hands holding its babies Resting in their dungarees. And mirror, I’m my grown up self subtracting notches from my belt. Look happy and smile at me! Look happy you mild nothing! I know I’m only visiting home after I’ve been out on my own. I know I’m only visiting home after I’ve been out on my own. Grab all graduates by their mothball gown fabrics And their sleeves bursting with magic And try to move them past it. But you know that you can’t go home again. And I know that I’m only visiting home after I’ve been out on my own. Now I am only visiting home after I’ve been kicked out.

Rawhead 04:03
After they’d done all their scarred hands could do They spat gobs of phlegm into all of my wounds. But as if all the moonshine had pumped into their eyes The dawn came through bright and the bastards went blind. Peeling off skin with the tar and the feathers I kneaded the shells where his muscles were leather. There’s an abscessed absence where his legs come together. A burn on his neck squirms like worms in bad weather. They kissed with cicadas at night. The men stole them away at first light. Clearing his throat with gargling chokes He moved to put his back on my oak. His eyes looked through me To a house in the east where An annoyed young girl Stamps out her window. I’d seen him before in the fields We’d each work for all we could yield. But his eyes would climb the stalks beyond mine. He was projected on the horizon. I had seen him before in the fields. After they’d done all their scarred hands could do They spat gobs of phlegm into all of my wounds. But as if all the moonshine had pumped into their eyes The dawn came through bright and the bastards went blind. They kissed with cicadas at night. The men stole them away at first light.
